In lieu of the reading activities coordinated by our local elementary schools for,The National Education Association's Read Across America Day, March 3rd, we were motivated to take on a reading challenge this month!
"The National Education Association's Read Across America is in its 17th year. This year-round program focuses on motivating children and teens to read through events, partnerships, and reading resources."

So how can we make a difference by reading?
Just like this... the organization Room to Read, Students helping Students, proposes The World Change Challenge for groups, families, or classes. The guidelines are to read for at least 5,000 minutes in a month to raise literacy awareness. Participants will raise awareness of the importance of global literacy while also contributing to the gift of education for kids throughout the developing areas of Asia and Africa.
Below is the official website for Room to Read. It's an awesome organization that is geared to celebrating literacy and spreading education across the world. There are 790 million illiterate adults in the world today and almost 100 million kids who are not enrolled in primary school. If you have a group or class that wants to make a change around the world... check it out! With the variety of opportunities to help that Room to Read has to offer, you can find the right one for you! http://www.roomtoread.org/students
Through this organization over 8 million children have been helped, over 1500 schools have been built, and over 13,000,000 books have been distributed.
As a group we decided we can fulfill this reading challenge and raise $5 each to donate. The girls are going to earn the $5 donation by helping out around the house, family or neighbors. The 5000 minutes divided by our 13 girls comes to 13 minutes a day, or 390 minuets for the month. We hope by participating in The World Change Challenge, it will encourage healthy reading habits for our girls. More importantly to initiate becoming more aware of the world around them and how they can make a difference.
Come back soon to check for updates of our total minutes read, money raised, and future fundraising we hope to participate in. And don't forget you can get involved too! http://www.roomtoread.org/students
