The next badge we are working on is Fair Play. This badge will require us to learn about playing fair, making sure everyone is playing by the same rules and to include anyone that wants to play too. We will discover women athletes, we will make up new rules to an old game, the importance of teamwork, and how to explain a new game and the rules to our friends.
This badge will take us two meetings to complete. We talked about fair play and when is it okay to change the rules. We talked about including everyone so nobody gets left out. We started with teamwork. In our handbook there is a the Octopus Tag game. I taught them the rules of the game and they were ready to get started. We used the grass area across from our library to run around in. Finally feeling like Spring around here!!
The idea of the game is for the Octopus (the two girls who were "it") to work as a team holding hands to tag the rest of the players. Our Octopus started with two girls, as they tagged each other instead of getting out they joined hands and became a part of the Octopus, until everyone was tagged and a part of the Octopus team. They had to remain holding hands the entire time. At first the "it" girls were saying "we need more girls, we need more power." However, they quickly realized that the longer the Octopus got the harder to became to run fast and freely. They had to figure out how to team together to trap the others. Sometimes working as a team is easy and efficient, but other times it can be a challenge. They really had to strategize with each other in order to get the others. Just like in life there will be times where teamwork is essential for completing a task but maybe it's not as easy as just doing it alone. It's important for them to listen to each other, speak up and give their ideas to the group, and also to realize that there will be times the group may decide on other strategies to get the job done, instead of theirs.

The second part of the badge we completed was learning to make up new rules to an old game. We started with a simple game of duck duck duck goose, which soon turned into girl girl girl scout and skipping around the circle, to pizza pizza pizza bake and two girls choosing another to be it, they hopped, ran, tip toed and skipped around the circle. Each girl had a turn making up new rules to the game and teaching it to their friends. The girls had some great ideas for new rules, which kept everyone laughing and having a good time. I liked that a few times the new rules were so extensive that they had to explain it a couple times or even give a demonstration for the rest of troop to follow along. They girls confused spoke up and asked questions and the girl choosing the rules had to be clear and concise to clear up the confusion. It was great communication practices! They waited to start each round until everyone knew the rules, to play fair!
For take home work, the girls were asked to think of another old game and make up two new rules. If they can they will teach the rules to other friends then play the game. Next meeting I cant wait to hear all about the new versions of the games and how much fun they had playing. We will choose a game or two to play as a troop next meeting. Have fun girls and be creative!!
